A purposeful programme
Post-16 learners may need to strengthen English and maths, explore future options or regain confidence after a disrupted education. We agree a purposeful programme connected to the young person’s intended next step.
Consolidate essential skills and explore GCSE or Functional Skills support where appropriate.
CVs, applications, workplace communication and interview practice linked to realistic interests.
Practise everyday decisions, organisation and communication while planning the move into a suitable next setting.
An example in practice
Exploring a course or role can lead into reading requirements, preparing a short personal statement and practising a conversation. Feedback helps the learner recognise strengths and identify what to practise next. Activities are adapted individually.
CORE SKILLS · POST-16
Post-16 core learning focuses on English, maths and useful skills for the next step. Activities connect with the learner's goals, whether that means further study, work or greater independence.
Read and understand course or job information, write clear emails and applications, develop spelling and punctuation, and practise explaining ideas. GCSE or Functional Skills support may be included where suitable and agreed.
Work with money, budgets, percentages, time, measures, tables and graphs. For example, compare travel costs, plan a weekly budget or interpret information needed for a course or workplace task.
Use reading, calculation and problem-solving in practical tasks such as planning a journey, following instructions or preparing for an interview. Relevant science topics can be discussed where they support the learner's agreed pathway.
The programme is agreed individually. This does not describe an A-level or standalone post-16 science course offer. Qualification availability, assessment and exam-entry arrangements are confirmed separately.
Clarity before provision starts
An agreed combination of English, maths, practical learning and preparation for the next pathway.
Individual teaching and mentoring, with help to organise goals, build participation and prepare transitions.
Functional Skills or GCSE support may form part of the plan where suitable. Course availability, assessment and exam-entry arrangements are confirmed individually. This page does not describe an A-level course offer.
From enquiry to review
The programme, session arrangements and review approach are agreed before provision begins. An enquiry is the start of a suitability discussion.
Talk about interests, previous learning and what has made the next step difficult.
Agree learning priorities, delivery, support and any qualification arrangements.
Review readiness and plan applications or introductions with the relevant adults and receiving setting.
Safety underpins the plan. Safeguarding contacts, relevant information, adult responsibilities and safe delivery arrangements are discussed before support starts. Safer recruitment and professional boundaries matter throughout.
