Private GCSE Candidates: What to Confirm with an Exam Centre

Use a practical checklist when contacting an exam centre about private GCSE entry, fees, assessment components, access arrangements and important deadlines.

Private GCSE entry needs its own plan. A learner may have a tutor, suitable textbooks and a clear study routine, yet still need a centre that can accept their exact qualification and provide all the required assessments.

For families in England, the safest approach is to obtain written confirmation of the entry arrangements before making commitments that depend on them. Do not assume that a nearby school accepts private candidates or that tuition fees include exam entry.

Check the exact qualification first

Prepare the subject name, awarding organisation, specification code and tier where relevant. Ask whether the centre accepts private candidates for that qualification in the intended exam series.

The JCQ private candidate search and guidance can help identify possible centres. Its listings are a starting point: acceptance, fees and internal deadlines must be checked directly.

Ask about every assessment component, including any practical, spoken or non-exam assessment requirements. A centre being able to host a written paper does not necessarily mean it can provide everything needed for the qualification.

If a family is still comparing support arrangements, our guide to choosing educational support can help identify questions to ask. The eventual qualification choice should also take account of the learner’s intended college course or other next step.

Request a complete written quotation

An initial headline fee may not answer all the practical questions. Ask what the total includes and whether there are additional charges for particular components, administration or requested services. Obtain the terms before paying.

Use this enquiry checklist:

  • Can you accept this specification and all its components?
  • What information and identification do you require?
  • What are your entry and payment deadlines?
  • What is the full fee, and what might cost extra?
  • What happens if an entry is changed or cancelled?
  • Where will each assessment take place?
  • How are results and certificates provided?
  • Who handles questions after results are released?

Keep the centre's reply, payment records and entry confirmation together. Ask how to check the candidate details and subject entries, then correct any errors promptly through the centre.

Avoid relying on another family's previous fees or dates. A different centre, qualification or exam series may have different arrangements.

Discuss access needs before committing

Tell the centre about any barriers that may affect assessment and ask about its process for access arrangements. Explain the learner's usual support, while recognising that the centre must establish what is permitted and what evidence is required.

Ask whether it can meet the learner's needs and what remains to be confirmed. Do not assume that a diagnosis, an EHCP or support used in tuition automatically secures a particular exam adjustment.

For example, a fictional learner studies successfully in a quiet room at home. The family should ask what the centre can offer, how this would be agreed and whether a familiarisation visit is possible. They should not discover the venue arrangements for the first time on exam morning.

Keep teaching and entry information aligned

Give the tutor the centre-confirmed specification and planned assessment dates. Agree who will flag changes. Reconnect's GCSE support can be discussed as part of the teaching plan, without assuming that Reconnect acts as the exam centre or books entries.

Set up one shared checklist with an owner for each task. It might cover course coverage, remaining components, equipment, travel and contact details. The family should know which issues go to the tutor and which require the centre.

Before the exam period, check the actual venue, arrival instructions and travel plan. Follow the centre's current candidate instructions about permitted items and identification. Make a plan for who to contact if illness, disruption or a timetable query arises.

A confirmed entry should leave the learner free to concentrate on preparation. If you need help identifying the teaching support required alongside that entry, contact Reconnect Learning with the qualification details and the centre's confirmed arrangements.
