Skills & future pathways

A first spark.
A new possibility.

Sometimes the next step starts with trying something different. Our vocational tasters connect a learner’s interests with practical projects, new skills and a clearer picture of what could come next.

Vocational Tasters

For curious minds. And learners still finding their spark.

A taster gives young people a manageable way to explore a subject or area of work before choosing a longer route. It can be a useful starting point when a learner needs a reason to engage, wants to investigate an interest or is unsure what to do next.

The learner explores an interest through a manageable project brief. They try a task, explain their choices and reflect on what interested or challenged them. The experience can help identify questions to investigate before choosing further learning.

Explore the learning

Less “what do you want to be?”
More “let’s try this.”

Explore these illustrative project briefs. Each connects a practical challenge with communication, problem solving and reflection.

PROJECT IDEA / 01

Design a welcoming space

Imagine a small early years space. What would help children feel safe, included and ready to explore?

  • Choose an age group and plan a simple activity
  • Identify resources and explain safe choices
  • Present the idea and reflect on what you learned

These are illustrative project ideas, not a fixed course list. Topics, resources, delivery and availability are agreed around the individual learner.

A purposeful journey

From a starting point
to a next step.

01

Find the interest

Listen to the learner’s ideas, strengths and experiences. Choose a starting point that feels worth exploring.

02

Agree the brief

Set a manageable task, suitable resources and the support needed to take part.

03

Try, make, reflect

Develop the project, practise useful skills and talk about what felt interesting or challenging.

04

Shape the next step

Use the experience to identify strengths, further questions and possible learning routes.

Progress you can understand

Something to show.
Something to build on.

The value of a taster is more than a finished task. We look at the decisions made, the skills practised and what the learner now understands about their interests.

Reviews bring together the work, the learner’s voice and observations about the support they need. That picture helps families and referring professionals plan what comes next.

Talk to our team →
Is this programme a qualification?

The programme develops skills and provides learning evidence; it does not automatically award a qualification. If an accredited route is proposed, the qualification title, level, awarding organisation, eligibility, assessment arrangements and fees will be confirmed before enrolment.

What is agreed before support begins?

We discuss suitability, learning priorities, the delivery setting, timetable, fees, relevant access and support needs, and the responsibilities of the adults involved. Any qualification entry or external activity is confirmed separately.

Are these confirmed courses?

The project examples show the kind of learning that can be explored. The subject, resources, delivery and availability are agreed individually before a taster begins.

Is a taster a qualification or work placement?

A taster is an introduction. Any accreditation, external visit, placement or certificate needs to be discussed and confirmed separately.

Can a taster sit alongside English and maths?

Yes, the project can be planned to practise relevant literacy, numeracy and communication skills alongside the agreed learning priorities.

Can we request your policies?

All policies are available on request through our policy request form.
