What Is EBSNA?

EBSNA stands for Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance. It describes situations where a child or young person experiences significant emotional distress that affects their ability to attend school.

This is not simply “refusing school”. Many children with EBSNA want to learn, want friendships and want things to feel normal again, but anxiety, overwhelm or unmet needs can make attending school feel impossible.

Common Signs of EBSNA

  • Anxiety before school
  • Stomach aches, headaches or feeling unwell
  • Panic, crying or distress in the morning
  • Difficulty leaving the house
  • Reduced attendance
  • Withdrawal from friends or activities
  • Low mood or emotional overwhelm

What Can Cause EBSNA?

Every child is different, and EBSNA can happen for many reasons. It may be linked to anxiety, SEND, bullying, sensory needs, trauma, friendship difficulties, academic pressure or previous negative experiences in education.

For some young people, school can begin to feel unsafe, overwhelming or unmanageable. The longer this continues, the harder it can feel to return without the right support.

How Parents Can Help

Parents often feel under pressure when their child is not attending school, but EBSNA usually needs a calm, supportive and gradual approach.

  • Listen without judgement
  • Try to understand what feels difficult for your child
  • Work with school and professionals
  • Avoid blame or shame
  • Focus on small steps forward
  • Ask for support early
