When a child stops attending school, it can be an incredibly stressful and emotional time for both the young person and their family. Many parents feel overwhelmed, unsure what to do next and worried about the long-term impact on their child's education.
The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone. School attendance difficulties are becoming increasingly common, and there are support pathways available.
Why Do Children Stop Attending School?
There is rarely a single reason why a child stops attending school. Often, attendance difficulties develop over time and may be linked to a combination of factors.
Common reasons include:
- School anxiety or EBSNA
- SEND needs
- Bullying
- Mental health difficulties
- Social challenges
- Sensory difficulties
- Medical conditions
- Trauma or adverse experiences
- Difficulties with transitions
- Negative experiences within education
What Should Parents Do First?
If your child is struggling to attend school, try to understand what may be causing the difficulty. Rather than focusing solely on attendance, it is important to explore the barriers that are making attendance difficult.
Consider:
- Talking openly with your child
- Speaking to school staff
- Recording patterns and triggers
- Seeking professional advice
- Requesting additional support if needed
Can My Child Still Access Education?
Yes. Even when school attendance becomes difficult, children and young people should continue to receive educational support wherever possible.
Depending on individual circumstances, support may include:
- Alternative Provision
- Home Tuition
- Online Learning
- SEND Support
- EOTAS Provision
- Mentoring
- Reintegration Programmes
What Is EOTAS?
Education Otherwise Than At School (EOTAS) may be considered where a child is unable to attend school and their needs cannot reasonably be met through a school placement.
EOTAS arrangements are typically considered through the EHCP process and should be based on the individual needs of the child or young person.
Supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing
When attendance becomes difficult, a young person's emotional wellbeing should remain a priority.
Many children experiencing attendance difficulties report feeling anxious, isolated, overwhelmed or worried about falling behind. Supporting wellbeing alongside education is often essential to achieving long-term success.
The Importance of Small Steps
Progress does not always happen quickly. For some learners, success may begin with engaging in a short online session, meeting a mentor or rebuilding confidence through personalised learning.
Small steps can lead to significant long-term progress when support is consistent and tailored to the individual.
